The problem with every sun hat is the journey there. A structured hat arrives crushed or takes up half a suitcase. The Vista is made from a finely woven paper straw specifically because that material solves both: it is stiff enough to hold a 3.9-inch brim that actually shades your face and neck, and flexible enough to be rolled flat and packed against the side of a bag for a whole flight. Unroll it at the other end, give it an hour, and it returns to shape without a crease.

The weave is tight and even, which matters for more than looks. An open weave lets dappled light through in dots; a tight one gives continuous shade, and the difference is noticeable on the back of your neck by mid-afternoon. Straw breathes where felt and synthetic do not, so the crown stays cool instead of trapping heat, and the brim is left slightly downturned so it shades without blocking your peripheral view.

A narrow vegetable-tanned leather band circles the crown with a small debossed yuvqen tab at one side. It is not decoration — the band is where the hat gets lifted from, and leather holds that point of repeated contact far better than straw does. An internal cotton sweatband and an adjustable inner drawcord let the fit be dialled in, which is what keeps a wide brim on in wind.

It weighs almost nothing, floats in water rather than absorbing it, and dries in an hour if it gets caught in the surf.
